Pelvic Organ Prolapse is  a common female health condition. A pelvic organ prolapse is the falling down, sinking, or bulging into the pelvic organs. The pelvic organs which can slip from their normal position include the uterus (womb), bladder, and rectum.

Some women notice nothing at all, but others report these symptoms with pelvic organ prolapse:

  • A feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvic area
  • A backache low in the back
  • Painful intercourse
  • A feeling that something is falling out of the vagina
  • Urinary problems such as leaking of urine or a chronic urge to urinate
  • Constipation
  • Spotting or bleeding from the vagina

In Chinese medicine Pelvic Floor prolapses are primarily viewed as being related to sinking spleen qi. The treatment principle is to tonify Spleen Qi and raise the Yang energy.

There is a well known herbal formula called Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang especially effective for treating this condition. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is made of 4 group of herbs:

  • Herbs to tonify Qi especially Spleen Qi
  • Herbs to move Qi
  • Herbs to tonify blood
  • Herbs to raise up Qi/energy

The author has experience with using Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang to treat POP on herself. The background is that the author went back to China to look after a very sick parent for over a month. After a long return flight home, she noticed a sinking feeling around the rectum with hemorrhoids. She bleed a lot of blood when going to the toilet and felt dizzy afterwards.

After taking the Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang the first day the bleeding stopped. After 2 days the hemorrhoids disappeared. And the author felt the energy is back.

Hard working, stress, worry can all consume Spleen Qi and cause Spleen Qi sinking. Bu Zhong Yi QI Tang is a famous formula from Li Dong Yuan (1180-1251). It has been used for nealy a thousand year to treat conditions like POP, lack of energy, poor digestive system, poor immune function etc.

Alternatively Acupuncture can be effective to treat POP. DU20 Bai Hui is the essential point to raise up Qi along with other points to tonify Spleen Qi.
