Period pain is a common complaints women have for their menstration cycles. It’s usually felt as painful muscle cramps in the abdomen, which can spread to the back and thighs. The pain sometimes comes in intense spasms, while at other times it may be dull but more constant.
In Chinese medicine we categorized the patterns of painful period as below:
- Qi (energy) stagnation with blood stagnation
- Coldness in the Uterus causing blood stagnation
- Damp heat in the lower abdomen
- Qi and blood deficiency
- Kidney energy deficiency
The first 2 patterns are the most common ones in the clinic. Period pain can be treated with Acupuncture, herbs or sometimes a change of diet/life style depending on the severity.
I will discuss each pattern in details in the next articles.
