Zang Zao (Depression, PTSD)

abuse or assault, an accident, illness or sudden death of a loved one could cause huge distress to us.

“Zang Zao” is a Chinese medicine term. The main symptoms of it are deep sadness and can’t stop crying. Zang Zao, in Chinese medicine is caused by Heart and Spleen Qi deficiency. Traumatic experience and the stress from by the experience can result in the Heart and Spleen Qi deficiency.

There is a simple formula called Gan Mai Da Zao Tang which could help us coping with the emotions from the traumatic experience.

Gan Mai Da Zao Tang has 3 ingredients:

  • Gan Cao – Licorice root
  • Xiao Mai – Wheat
  • Da Zao – Chinese Dates

It is a simple but effective formula for emotional disorders. It can be used to treat conditions such as postpartum depression, anxiety, crying fits, general depression, manic depression, PTSD, and many others.

Wheat in Chinese medicine goes into the Heart. Licorice Root and Chinese Dates enhance Spleen energy.

Another way to manage Zang Zao is to do Acupuncture or Acupressure on the point Shao Hai – HT 3. The location of this point is When the elbow is flexed, the point is in the depression between the medial end of the transverse cubital crease of the elbow and the medial epicondyle of the humerus.

Usually with Zang Zao syndrome you can easily find a very tender point close to the inner elbow. Massage this point will help with the emotions. HT-3 Shao Hai is the mother point of the heart meridian which nourishes the Heart Qi.
